Domestic wastewater

Our residential wastewater treatment solutions

Independent wastewater treatment is a crucial issue for areas not connected to the public sewage network (hamlets or housing estates, hotels or chalets, campsites or residences). Treating wastewater and storing rainwater from roofs efficiently and sustainably is essential to protect public health and the environment.

What are the main issues involved in treating domestic wastewater in the residential sector?

Wastewater treatment consists of eliminating pollutants present in water from domestic activities, such as black water (toilets) and grey water (kitchen, bathroom, etc.).

In remote areas or those not served by centralized sewerage systems, domestic wastewater treatment becomes even more critical for public health and environmental protection.

Key issues include :

  • Environmental pollution: Untreated wastewater contains suspended solids, organic matter, nitrates, phosphates, etc., which can pollute surface and groundwater and affect aquatic biodiversity. Wastewater treatment makes it possible to limit these environmental impacts, while complying with water discharge standards.
  • Health risk: The accumulation of organic matter in wastewater can encourage the spread of disease and pathogens, representing a risk to public health. Wastewater treatment helps reduce these health risks, while complying with water quality standards.
  • Sustainability of resources: in a context of climate change and water scarcity, it is essential to make the most of water as a renewable resource and reduce wastage. Storing rainwater from roofs means it can be reused for a variety of purposes (flushing toilets, watering green spaces, etc.), reducing drinking water consumption and associated costs.

What regulations apply to wastewater treatment and water storage?

In the sanitation sector,

  • L’arrêté du 7 septembre 2009 relatif aux prescriptions techniques applicables aux installations d’assainissement non collectif` (French decree of September 7, 2009 on the technical requirements applicable to non-collective sanitation installations).
  • The Ministerial Order of July 21, 2015 on collective sanitation systems and non-collective sanitation installations, with the exception of non-collective sanitation installations receiving a gross organic pollution load less than or equal to 1.2 kg/d of BOD5

For water storage, the applicable decree is that of August 21, 2008 on rainwater harvesting and its use inside and outside buildings.
