Road infrastructure

Our solutions for road infrastructure

When it comes to building and maintaining road infrastructure (roads, freeways, pavements, parking lots, rest areas, service stations, car washes, etc.), the efficient management of rainwater and wastewater is a major challenge. This process involves not only collecting and evacuating water, but also treating it to prevent pollution and the risk of flooding. Water treatment and management are governed by a number of regulatory texts, which must be taken into account when choosing suitable, compliant products.

What are the main problems associated with wastewater and stormwater in transport infrastructures?

Wastewater of domestic origin (such as black water from rest areas) must be treated before discharge into the natural environment by the local authority’s wastewater treatment plant, or by an on-site treatment system based on biological treatment.

Wastewater from kitchens and restaurants is loaded with suspended solids, grease and organic matter, and represents a real risk of clogging networks, releasing toxic gases and contaminating water at the treatment plant by reducing oxygen transfer.

Wastewater from washing areas, loaded with sludge, organic matter, hydrocarbons and heavy metals, undergoes pre-treatment (decantation and de-oiling) before discharge into the wastewater network with treatment at a wastewater treatment plant, or specific treatment with a view to reuse in a closed circuit.

The management and treatment of stormwater in road infrastructures are major challenges for the preservation of water resources, environmental protection and user safety. Poorly managed and/or maintained road infrastructures can lead to flooding, environmental degradation and public safety risks.

Stormwater can :

  • Carry pollutants (suspended solids, hydrocarbons including PAHs, heavy metals, etc.) that settle on impermeable surfaces and can contaminate receiving aquatic environments (rivers, lakes, water tables, etc.) through runoff.
  • Generate high water and floods that can damage road infrastructure, buildings, crops and the property of local residents, and endanger human life.
  • Alter the natural water cycle by reducing infiltration and evaporation, which can lead to lower water tables, increased runoff and reduced biodiversity.

Faced with these problems, it is necessary to implement integrated stormwater management solutions, which aim to respect the water cycle as much as possible, encourage infiltration as close as possible to where it falls, reduce its volume and flow speed, and improve its quality.

What regulations apply?

Wastewater must be managed in compliance with the local authority’s discharge agreement and the requirements stipulated in the building permit or discharge authorization for facilities classified for environmental protection (ICPE).

The following three product standards apply:

  • For grease separators: EN 1825, NFP 16-500-1/CN
  • For sludge traps and hydrocarbon separators: EN 858, NF16-442, NFP 16-451-1/CN
  • For biological treatment plants: EN 12566-3, Order of July 21, 2015

Stormwater management for road infrastructures is governed by a number of regulatory texts, in particular the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) of 2020 and the Law on Water and Aquatic Environments (LEMA) n°2006-1772 of 2006.
